On February 3rd and 4th in Salmon Arm, Shuswap Middle School held the Barry Dearing Invitational Grade 8 Boys tournament. All proceeds from this tournament go to the Barry Dearing Foundation, which supports youth in the Salmon Arm community who are unable to participate in athletic or artistic programs due to financial restrictions.
The Salmon Arm Basketball Officials Association members refereed this tournament, donating all fees to the foundation, which resulted in $585 going forward to this wonderful initiative.
Barry Dearing was a long-time referee with the Salmon Arm Association. He was also actively involved in the recruitment, training and mentoring of officials throughout his dedicated years of service. Barry was also a BCBOA Provincial Evaluator and a BCBOA Executive Committee member. Barry was a talented school administrator who wanted all students to have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities.
Of interest, this tournament draws retired referees out because they want to support the cause. This year Carl Cooper and Tom Golz dusted off their gear and participated. What a wonderful example of a great “Pink Whistle” project!
